beginning violin

the violins are painfully
out of tune,
even on open strings;
but nonetheless
we applaud adoringly

tonight, at the bar
the fiddle player
(fluent on three instruments)
will be perfectly
on pitch

he, too, was once
on that elementary stage;
and we heard, today,
grace notes anticipating
beautiful melodies
soaring from future
concert halls and
front porches
